Derouging and Passivation of Stainless-Steel Equipment

  • Date: Wednesday August 28, 2024
  • Time: 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm (NY Time)
  • Instructor(s): Paul Lopolito and Dijana Hadziselimovic
  • Webinar ID#: ECC-628
Webinar Details:

Pharmaceutical facilities as they age experience some level of corrosion resulting in rouged stainless-steel equipment. There are several factors that can contribute to rouge formation including presence of halides, oxidizing chemistries, extreme pH’s, high temperatures, dissimilar metallurgy, defects, improper welding, and inadequate passivation. Rouge on stainless steel increases surface roughness which can reduce cleanability, sanitization, contamination control practices and equipment life expectancy. Part one will cover different types of rouge, its formation, and industry best practices for derouging process equipment and piping. Part two will focus on understanding the ability of stainless steel to resist corrosion by forming a non-reactive passive layer. Both parts will include laboratory generated data, discussion of portable analytical tools for in-field evaluation, remediation, and prevention strategies.

During the webinar we will discuss the following:

  • Causes, concerns, and remediation of rouge
  • Passivation best practices and verification tools
  • Connection between routine cleaning and passivation in maintaining stainless steel surfaces to prevent rouge
